What is QR Code?
Comprehensive guide to QR code history, principles, applications and trends
Overview
QR Code (Quick Response Code) is a two-dimensional matrix barcode invented by Denso Wave in 1994 in Japan. Compared to traditional one-dimensional barcodes, QR codes can store much more information including text, URLs, contact information, and have extremely high reading speed and error tolerance.
History
QR codes were originally developed to track automotive parts during manufacturing. Due to their openness and practicality, they quickly became widely used across industries. It became an ISO international standard in 2000, and with the proliferation of smartphones, QR codes experienced explosive growth in mobile payments, marketing, and information sharing.
Technical Principles
QR codes use Reed-Solomon error correction algorithm, allowing correct reading even when partially damaged. Supports four error correction levels (L, M, Q, H) and can store up to 4,296 alphanumeric characters. Structure includes finder patterns, alignment patterns, format information, version information, and data areas for fast and accurate recognition.
Applications
- •Mobile Payments: Alipay, WeChat Pay and other scan-to-pay systems
- •Marketing: Product introductions, promotional campaigns, coupon distribution
- •Information Sharing: Contact details, WiFi passwords, website links
- •Authentication: Electronic ticketing, conference check-in, access control
- •Product Traceability: Food safety, pharmaceutical regulation, anti-counterfeiting
- •Education: Course materials, online learning, interactive teaching
Advantages
- ✓Large Storage: 1000+ times more information than 1D barcodes
- ✓Fast Reading: 360-degree omnidirectional recognition with extremely fast reading
- ✓Error Tolerance: Can still read correctly even with 30% damage
- ✓Low Cost: Almost zero generation and printing costs
- ✓Wide Application: Supports text, URL, email, phone and other data types
- ✓Open Standard: ISO international standard, universally compatible
Future Trends
With the development of IoT, blockchain, AR/VR technologies, QR codes are evolving towards intelligence and personalization. Innovative forms like colored QR codes, dynamic QR codes, and logo-embedded QR codes continue to emerge. QR codes will play an increasingly important role in digital transformation and smart city construction.
